From the 16th to the 19th century, Haute-Saône was the richest and most populous département of Franche-Comté. Bordered by the Vosges mountains to the north and the Jura chain to the south, and located at the crossroads of Lorraine, Champagne-Ardennes and Burgundy, it long suffered invasions from its neighbours.
The plentiful supply of wood and water gave rise to a dynamic economy of sawmills, forges and mills. Its geological resources favored the development and operation of mines and blast furnaces. This rich industrial and commercial history has had a big impact on the Haute-Saône economy. Today, in harmony with its remarkably well-preserved environment, a flourishing industry with sought-after skills is developing.
The people of Haute-Saône are by nature determined yet modest! Motivated by their liking for a job well done, the people of this region have learned to adapt technology and products by acquiring excellent skills. And Haute-Saône has managed to keep hold of recognized talents. Today, this knowledge and technology are put to use in four main fields: metalwork, the automotive industry, timber and the food industry.
